(businesspress24) - BARCELONA, SPAIN -- (Marketwired) -- 03/02/15 -- -- , the market leader in helping operators accelerate delivery of Internet video and other over-the-top (OTT) content, announced today that it is joining ETSI, the European Telecommunications Standards Institute, and will be an active member of its Mobile-edge Computing Industry Specification Group (ISG).

The Mobile-edge Computing (MEC) initiative was announced in October 2014 and is working toward a future standardized, open environment that will allow efficient and seamless integration of third-party applications across multi-vendor platforms. Mobile-edge Computing provides IT and cloud-computing capabilities within the Radio Access Network (RAN) in close proximity to mobile subscribers.

"In today''s mobile network, content delivery mechanisms are constantly pressured to deliver the best quality of experience while dealing with rising complexity in the radio and packet core part of the network," said Sathya Atreyam, IDC Research Manager Wireless Network Infrastructure. "The ETSI-led Mobile Edge Computing initiative is a good indicator of the growing need to reduce friction in the mobile internet ecosystem value chain. Mobile operators will seek innovative technologies within the radio and packet core to further narrow the gap between a consumer and the content ensuring an increased level of customer satisfaction."

PeerApp recently announced an evolution of its current mobile core offerings to bring Internet content acceleration to the edge of mobile networks. The will complement the existing PeerApp mobile core solution by bringing optimization functionality such as content caching and DNS (domain name server) caching to the RAN. PeerApp''s new Mobile Edge Computing solution, powered by Saguna, leverages Network Function Virtualization (NFV) to bring cloud and virtualization concepts to the RAN. This allows applications to run as close as possible to the subscriber resulting in a Quality of Experience (QoE) for subscribers, a particular challenge with mobile video.

The new virtualized solution will be showcased this week at the Mobile World Congress show in in Hall 2 Stand 2D50. Operators interested in seeing a demo at the show can contact PeerApp at .

It was also announced today that PeerApp is a founding partner of the Vendor Forum, a forum of leading technology vendors dedicated to fostering adoption of network functions virtualization (NFV) and promoting best-of-breed implementation practices through an NFV reference implementation in this rapidly emerging field.

More than 450 mobile, cable, broadband and campus network operators in 100 countries are using PeerApp''s award-winning open content caching solutions to accelerate the delivery of Internet video and other over-the-top (OTT) content. With PeerApp''s local content delivery, video can be delivered 12x faster by bringing it closer to end-users. This significantly improves quality of experience and reduces network costs up to 50% or more. PeerApp''s local content delivery solutions can also play a service delivery role, helping operators generate new revenue opportunities. PeerApp is headquartered in Newton, Massachusetts, USA.
